H. C. Seymour's Store, Cannonville, N.Y. 754

View of a general store and gas stop along a tree-lined unpaved road in a town near the Pennsylvania line east of Binghamton. The store is a classic example of an early 19th-century house converted to a roadside general store and gas stop. Late 19th-century storefront windows flanking a door replace the original windows, while the front porch becomes part of the entrance and a place to sit and share news with neighbors. Two gas pumps from the 1920s stand outside, with room for a vehicle to pull in on either side. Signs advertise Socony Gasoline/ Motor Oil, "Switch to new Mobiloil/Even Better than xxx Motor Oil", Goodyear, and ice cream. An Empire Deposit (State Bank) signboard displays posters for public entertainments, including "Stowaway" and "Night World", a 1932 drama film. This is one of a series of images made in upstate New York state by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or New York state. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the plant on High Street. The town of Cannonsville was flooded for a reservoir in 1964. It is not known if this scene was impacted.
