R. R. Station, Andover, N.Y. 77
Image of a railroad passenger station seen across two sets of tracks in a rural setting. A small group of boys stand on the platform in front, some looking out at the photographer. There are no trains in sight. A line of utility poles stands in diminishing perspective along the tracks at the right. Beyond the station along the track is a tripod structure supporting an apparatus which could hold an outgoing mailbag. "Some railroads had Railway Post Office (RPO) cars that could grab a mailbag at speed from such a support, without stopping or involving workers in the transfer." [source: Cameron Gilchrist] According to signs on the building, Western Union Telegraph and cable services are available at the station. Another poster advertises Piedmont Cigarettes- "The Cigar of Quality". This is one of a series of images made in upstate New York state by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street.
