Front view of the public library at Rockland, Maine. Image scanned backwards. The granite building was constructed in 1904 and designed by Architect William Clough. It is a Carnegie library: one of the scores of elegant public library buildings constructed with seed funds from the Pittsburgh steel industrialist Andrew Carnegie. His $20,000 offer in 1903 came with the proviso that the City of Rockland come up with a site. Community fundraising and a donation from Emily Hitchcock and William Case funded the purchase of the lot, which offered a far more spacious setting than the existing smaller library had on Main Street.
