Color view of Fort William Henry at New Harbor, Pemaquid Beach, Maine. The Fort is a 1908 replica of the original, built in 1692 -- the largest of its kind in New England at the time, built to protect the northeastern frontier of the Massachusetts colony by the British. After the structure was destroyed in 1696 by French and Indian attackers in the Siege of Pemaquid, two forts were built successively during the colonial period. This image shows the corner tower, or bastion.
