"Hannibal Hamlin of Hampden and Bangor was the vice president of the United States of America from 1861–65, serving under President Abraham Lincoln. Before that, he was the 26th governor of Maine serving from Jan. 8, 1857 until he resigned on Feb. 25, 1857 to take a seat in the U.S. Senate; an office he held until 1861, and again from 1869 to 1881. Hamlin represented Penobscot County in the university’s original Board of Trustees and served as its president from 1865–66." [From University of Maine website]
