Fort Point St. George Me./ 37
"Fort Point St. George Me. View of peninsula across cove or channel; pebble beach runs length of near side of peninsula; open grassy area behind edged w/ shrubs and small trees; ddwellings dot ridge in the distance. The fort for which this point was named was built in 1809, was captured by the British in the War of 1812. Under Governor Percival Baxter, the State of Maine purchased the structure and grounds from the federal government in the 1920s. It was thereafter turned into a state park. A wharf which formerly extended from the point was carried away by ice in the 1880s. The tfown of Cushingvoted to have a ferry there in the early 1790s. When Joseph Robinson sold the point to the U. S. Government, he retained the right to access and use the ferry landing.
