Color transparency of Perry's Nuthouse on Route 1 in Belfast, ME c. 1960. Sculptures of two elephants and a giraffe are on the lawn, and a "Moccasins Deer Skin"sign is mounted on the building wall. Visitors and customers and their cars are in front of the store. I. L. Perry of Belfast opened a business to sell pecans and other nuts in 1927. Its success led him to move the store to his cigar factory, a former sea captain's house, on Route 1. He added curios from his travels, taxidermied animals. outdoor sculptures, and other oddities and eye-catching items and renamed the business Perry's Nuthouse. It became a well known roadside attraction for travelers on Route 1 and a draw for visitors from all over the world. As of 2019, it still sells nuts, candy, and souvenirs.
