On October 5, 1916, the Brooks news reported that Hoods Creamery Company had bought the land and buildings formerly owned by the Portland Packing Company and would remodel them into an up-to-date creamery. On October 21, 1921, the following item appeared in the Brooks news in The Republican Journal: "Black and Gay Canners, Inc. of Thomaston, Maine have completed the erection of the new canning factory at Brooks, Maine…With the cooperation of the people of the town of Brooks, this plant will be one of the largest producing plants for canned string beans, corn, and apples in the state of Maine." How true that statement was, and on October 5, 1944, a presentation ceremony was held in Brooks, at which time the War Food Administration honored Black and Gay Canners by awarding them the Achievement "A" award for outstanding contribution for the drive for victory. That award enabled the plant to fly the "A" award flag, and the raising of the flag was by the U.S. Coast Guard Color Guard.
