Odd pair at Atlantic, Maine

Odd pair at Atlantic, Maine. Maynard Staples private. Horse and steer hitched to wagon This photo shows Clyde Torrey's unique team of a cow and horse with an "island lash up cart" in front of the Baptist Church in Atlantic on Swan's Island in 1959. The cow, likely a Jersey Durham cross, was named Babe, and the horse was Sandy. They were trained to work together pulling a cart, mowing fields, and taking on whatever other jobs Clyde could rustle up. Clyde was a well-known character on Swan's Island. He played the accordion and always had a cigar…drooling down his chin. He was an old hermit, more or less, and in winter time when it was cold, he would live in his car. He would host music parties at his place which were known locally as 'hootenannies'.
