Wyeth, Andrew
Wyeth was an American realist painter; his style aligned closely with regionalism. He was a master of egg tempera and watercolor, and typically avoided oil paint.
His paintings tended to be poignant, rustic, elemental renderings of the people and rural landscapes he was drawn to. He was widely celebrated and enjoyed a lucrative career; on three occasions, his work sold to major museums at the highest prices in history for a living artist. This was especially remarkable given that his work was solidly representational at a time when abstraction came to dominate the art world.
Wyeth met Finnish American photojournalist Kosti Ruohomaa in 1947 in Maine; the two became close friends and shared an artistic kinship.
