No. 11 the Iron Ladder Cadillac Mt. Bar Harbor Me.
"No. 11: the Iron Ladder Cadillac Mt. neart Bar Harbor Me." "This is the Goat Trail on Pemetic Mtn, not Cadillac Mtn. It is the iron ladders built in the 1930s after the Mountain Road was blasted through the Goat Trail. The park removed them when it closed the trail in the mid 1970s." --David Goodrich, 2012 Despite the photo's title, the ranger is using an iron ladder to climb a steep section of trail on the Goat Path from Jordan Pond up Pemetic Mountain, not Cadillac Mountain. Like many early paths, the Goat Path took a steep route to the summit. Village Improvement Association Path Committee reports in 1906 and 1907 mention its popularity but express concern over the necessary maintenance expenses to prevent washouts and damage by walkers. Early guides mention orchids, rare plants, and an unusual combination of tree species at its lower end. Ralph Brunnow, who built the Precipice Trail up the near vertical cliffs of Champlain Mountain and other trails, introduced the use of iron ladders and hand holds. This iron ladder was built in the 1930s after the Mountain Road, now part of the Park Loop Road, was blasted through the Goat Path. It is now one of Acadia's abandoned trails, closed in the 1970s. The iron ladder is gone, but some stone steps and sections of railing remain.
