View at Monhegan Island, Me. 54.

"View at Monhegan Island, Me. 54." "This photograph is taken from Smutty Nose a small island between Monhegan and Manana where fishermen would store their lobster traps during the off season. The Monhegan lobstering season during the early 20th century when this photograph was taken ran from January to June. This image illustrates the rise of tourism on the island, the twin "Jenney Houses"are visible on the left and the Artur Pierce cottage is in the center. These summer residences were constructed in 1906 and 1907. Barely visible behind them is the original Monhegan House, a grand turn-of-the-century hotel which burned to the ground in January of 1924. In the distance the light tower is visible, and Lighthouse hills still has 2 dwellings. The Lightkeeper's house on the left is the current home of the Monhegan Museum, on the right is the Assistant Keeper's house. This position was eliminated in the 1920s and the structure dismantled in 1928. A replica was built by the Monhegan Museum in 1998 to house their archives and Gallery."
