Bridges at Little River Belfast Me. 6a.
"Bridges at Little River Belfast Me. 6a." These bridges are on the Atlantic Highway (U. S. Route 1) south of Belfast and cross the Little River. Upstream of the bridges is the current location of the Belfast Waterworks and dam. On the far shore of the river downstream of the bridges east of the Little River Bridge and on the north side of the Little River outlet into Penobscot Bay was is the building which at one time was the residence thought to have been built in 1796 by James Nesmith. In more recent years it housed the Little River Inn. From 1915 Waldo County Herald: The work on the new bridge at Little River, Northport, commenced last week. The contract for the stone work has been awarded to John I. snow of Rockland who will furnish and place the stone. According to recent figures made by Engineer Wilson of Augusta, it is estimated the new bridge will cost $6,271. It is badly needed for it is one of the most traveled highways in this section of Maine, on the road from Bangor to Rockland and over which hundreds of machines pass every day during the summer. The new bridge will be modern in every particular, The expense is to be borne by Belfast and Northport jointly, the bridge connecting the two towns at the boundary line. The location which has finally been decided upon is a little to the west of the present bridge, and do away with the curve on the Northport side, which has long been a menace to travel. It will be good news to the public that the work has been commenced during the dull season, which will undoubtedly mean that it will be open to travel within a few months. The bridge will be built with granite piers, iron span and will have cement tread.
