[included in the exhibit "Washington County Through Eastern's Eye"] LB2007.1.113219 Danforth Hotel, Danforth, Me. 32. The Danforth House was built by Washington Butterfield. It was a large structure located on Main Street. It was noted for its fine accommodations and livery. A large hall, with a balcony capable of seating twenty people, made it a popular meeting place for social or theatrical events. It was even used for roller skating on occasion. The large meeting area was called Hotel Hall, later known as Stinchfield's Hall. The Danforth town warrant for 1893 stated that "the town meeting will be held in Hotel Hall…" After George B. Brannen left the management of the hotel, A. P. Stinchfield managed it. During the depression of the 1930s, many of the once prosperous buildings were left vacant. When the owner of the Danforth House left town, the dining room tables were left set with tablecloths and place settings, awaiting a new influx of customers who never arrived. The building stayed in readiness for up to twenty years. Today only the cement or stone pillar, seen at the corner next to the driveway, remains. Caption written by Lorraine Springer
