"Congregational ChurcH. Warren, Maine. 309." "2nd Congregational Church- In 1820 the Congregational Society was weakened by an increase in activity of the Baptist Society. On February 5, 1828 a council was called for forming a Second Congregational Church in Warren. Two days later a new church was organized with 13 men and 10 women. The Second Congregational Society first held meetings in the courthouse until plans to relocate to the present site were discussed and approved. In June 1831 church members bought a 1/2 acre of land from William Hovey for $200. The plain looking building cost $400 and was dedicated January 16, 1833. A steeple was added in 1855 at a cost of $225. The steeple was destroyed in a gale in 1869 and was not replaced until 1877. The church bell dates from 1858. In 1886 the church was remodeled. $4,100 was raised for a new pipe organ, 2 new entrances were made, a new extension in front of the organ was built to increase seating capacity for 320 people. New stained glass windows and pews made of ash were added. The chapel that was built in 1878 was rededicated in September 1887. Over the years the church building has been repaired and remodeled. The 140 year old steeple has recently been restored in the past year. The steeple was rededicated on September 3, 2017." -- Karin Larson W.H.S Historian 2017
