The view is of Main Street, Searsport, looking west through the center of town. Visible at the center is the three-story brick Smart Block (1853) housing the drug store, the telephone business office and "Gilkey's". In the foreground on the right are the Post Office and Parker's Barber Shop (and "Billiards") advertised by the painted stripes on the telephone pole in front as well as by its lettered sign. A delivery truck labeled "Fresh Dairy Drinks and Chocolate..." is visible on the far left. Main Street is paved, serving increasing automobile traffic. The relatively large Gulf gas station logo and another large sign hung high, as well as the presence of tire pump at the street in front of the Gulf station and the painted lines indicating angled street parking, reflect the town's ongoing 20th-century shift to a vehicular orientation.
