"Champlain Monument and Headland, Seal Harbor, Maine 26k" "Champlain Monument. In 1604 Samuel de Champlain ran aground at Mt. Desert in his voyages in the New World, and was the first European to discover Mt. Desert. This monument was erected to commemorate his discovery. Later on as the road was widened the plaque was moved from the original stone [and was] affixed to the ledge on the side of the road."--Willie Granston, 2011
