[included in the exhibit "Hancock County Through Eastern's Eye"] LB2007.1.110815 S. Gouldsboro's Res. W. Gouldsboro, ME. 187. Samuel Gouldsboro was a farmer who lived on Beech Hill in the village of West Gouldsboro. His house is on the right. One of his sons, also a farmer, lived in the smaller home on the left. At the very left of the photo is a barn. Elizabeth Reilly, an 88-year-old woman living in the village in 2013, remembers walking past the farm in her childhood to visit her friend; Samuel's home was run down and unoccupied then. It no longer stands. A story passed down through generations relates that Samuel was rescued from a vessel when he was a child too young to tell his name, so "Gouldsboro," the name of the town, was chosen for him. Samuel's gravestone in the Beech Hill Cemetery within a quarter mile of his homestead records his death as February 1, 1889, age 84. The smaller home on the left still stands and has been added onto over the years. Since the time of this photo, the property has remained as farmland under various owners and is currently the site of Mandala Farm. Credit: George Daly and Mary Lou Hodge
