Veedol, Lubrication, Automotive, Car, Gas Station, Belfast, Maine This circa 1951 photo shows the Tydol station on High Street. Tidewater Oil Company was a major petroleum refining and marketing concern in the United States for more than 80 years. Tidewater was best known for its Flying A–branded products and gas stations, and for Veedol motor oil, which was known throughout the world. J. Paul Getty's purchase of holding company Mission Corp. in 1937 set the stage for the birth of Tidewater as a major national player in the oil industry. In 1966, Getty merged his numerous oil interests into Getty Oil Company, and Tidewater Oil was dropped as a corporate brand. Getty retained the Flying A brand for its East Coast stations until 1970, then dropped it in favor of its own Getty trademark. Texaco acquired Getty in 1984. Joe Cappuccio (1921-1990) the son of Peter & Margaret Cappuccio was born in Cohasset, Massachusetts. He was a WW2 veteran serving with the United States Coast Guard. He owned and operated the Joe's Service Station (Tydol) on High Street for 31 years. He was a past president and founding member of the Belfast Curling Club, a member of Rotary and a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was married to Mary (Scarsiloni) Cappuccio (d. 1992) The bunting suggests that the photo was probably taken around the 4th of July, Memorial Day or Veteran's Day, etc.
