This photo of "the Corner," the business center of Pembroke and the road over the stone bridge that leads to the Herseyside, was probably taken shortly after the fire of 1907. The rectangular site on the right was occupied by the E.R. Varney store that was lost in the fire. Nothing was rebuilt on that lot until 1940 when Frank Lincoln reconstructed a nearly identical building for an IGA store and gas station. The building later became Johnson's Anex (a hardware store, always spelled with a single "n"), and is currently the headquarters of the Pembroke Historical Society. Caption written by Gail Menzel
