View at Manchester, Me. 32.

"View at Manchester, Me. 32." View at fork of road showing early-19th century houses and a barn on a summer day. A set of trolley tracks connecting the town with Augusta crosses in the foreground. The image is taken from in front of Bowman's Store. The farmhouse was built around 1806 and since 1966 has been known as one of the "Ballard Apartments". On the road in the foreground is a road sign indicating directions to Poland Spring with an arrow pointing left, and "SamOset" with an arrow pointing right. A sign on the main road reads "Readfield 7Ms" with a symbol of a finger pointing left. Poland Mineral Springs Hotel, 30 miles to the southwest, and the Samoset Hotel in Rockland, 45 miles to the east, both owned by the Ricker family after 1902, were fairly distant from Manchester. Clearly the Ricker company saw a marketing opportunity at this intersection in an area popular with vacationers for its lakeside cottage resorts.
