View at W. Boothbay Harbor, ME. 79
View at West Boothbay Harbor, ME. Cottages, small boats, steps up to a dock. "This view shows the wharf that was in front of the store/post office, where the coasters came and went, and also where small passenger steamers sometimes landed. The huge roof behind the houses at the left is the ice house for storing tons of ice blocks well into summer. Behind it is a fresh water pond, where there was an ice business from the 1880s until refrigeration came along in the 1920s. There was a 500 foot wharf going out from it, where big 4- and 5-masters landed to load ice. The photographer would have been inside of this wharf as it went out diagonally or possibly on it." -- Margaret Tew 2020
