EIP Steamship Series- Icebreaker FAVORITE from Great Lakes at Stonington, Maine Winter of 1917-1918, In a brief article on Feb. 7, 1918, The Republican Journal writes of the presence of the "government ice breaker 'Favorite'" in Searsport, cutting a thirty foot channel to free the "East Hampton". Owing to the War and the severity of the weather, much of the Northeast experienced coal and sugar shortages that winter.
