Post Office, St. George, ME. St George Post Office, Wiley's Corner, Me. sign above sign for J.A.Elwell store. (4/24/2015) from the back of a discarded 8x10 Coffin Collection print from a postcard from this plate: 'The owner of the store, John A Elwell is standing in the doorway with (L. to R) in the foreground is Wilfred Robinson with cane, Alex Hathorn, Capt Cyrus Hilt, Capt. Arthur Thomas.The identity of the driver of the low bed grain wagon is unknown. The store had been the schoolhouse from 1827 to about 1890 when it was repaced by the "new schoolhouse." Elwell had it moved from the schoolhouse lot by Peter Hilt using a team of oxen. 16-1/2 feet was added to the building. the smaller building on the left, Elwell's earlier store was hauled from its foundation on what later became Julian Hawkin's lawn. Grain was sold from that part of the store. On the far left was Mr. Elwell's barn, torn down by his grandson Russell Thomas in the 1930s. Mr. Elwell had a garage and gas station for his 20-year-old grandson Russ in 1926. When Elwell's store and post office closed about 1956, Russ tore down that garage, remade the store a garage which he then operated. Since then Glenn Hall has used it as a garage in connection with his salt and bait business.
