[included in the "Hancock County Through Eastern's Eye" exhibit] LB2010.9.117871 The Mark Hatch House - 1771 - Castine, Maine C33.C Mark Hatch (1746-1833) was an early settler at Majabigwaduce or Penobscot, later Castine. He built his first house in 1771 near the location of this house, built about 1800 to replace the earlier house, which had been destroyed, possibly by fire. The west side of the house was used to lodge British troops in 1814 and 1815, as were many other houses in town. The house is sometimes called the Little Locksmith House because Katherine Butler Hathaway, who wrote the book The Little Locksmith, owned the house from 1921 to 1931. The book, published in 1943, is a memoir in which her Castine house has a significant part; it was a Reader's Digest Book of the Month selection and best seller. The house still stands on Court Street near the intersection with State Street. Credit: Paige Lilly, Castine Historical Society
