[included in the "Hancock County Through Eastern's Eye" exhibit] LB2010.9.117848 Water Tower, Castine, Maine In 1895 the Castine Water Company was formed and this windmill and the water works built near the reservoir at the entrance to Witherle Woods off Battle Avenue (then called High Street). The former lookout tower was possibly used for the windmill. Arthur M. Devereux, of Castine, who was a civil engineer, built and managed the water works, which provided a pure water supply to Castine residents. The windmill was moved east on Battle Avenue to be used at reservoir ponds in the 1930s. The water level ran low in 1952, and a Navy water barge replenished the water supply at least twice. Electric pumps were installed at the water works in the 1950, and the windmill was torn down and the well capped. Credit: Paige Lilly, Castine Historical Society
