The Weathervane, Rt 17, Readfield, Maine K11
Similar but slightly more expansive view of LB2010.9.121206. Image shows The Weathervane restaurant and its view of Maranacook Lake in summer. Large signs mounted on the wall of the restaurant read: "The Weathervane" and "Dining Room." Another sign advertises "Gifts," suggesting the presence of a gift shop. The restaurant and its tourist cottage offered a scenic view of the lake, and surely appealed to the many seasonal tourists and campers staying in the region. Roadside eateries such as this sprang up along state routes before and after World War II, as American families hit the road in their automobiles seeking out summertime vacation spots. In time many of these establishments were superceded by the interstates and their attendant services.
