GLADIATOR
The 32' Friendship Sloop GLADIATOR , No. 71 originally built by Alexander "Bug" McLain in March 1902, for Daniel Simmons of Waldoboro at a cost of $450. She sailed first without an engine, then after WWII she was taken to Chesapeake Bay for fishing with an engine installed. In 1965 Bill Zuber and Stuart Hancock bought the GLADIATOR and sailed it to Maine. The original keel was made of iron window weights. This was replaced in the mid '80's by E.Perry & Son in Portland with a 3,890 lead keel. The original white oak framing was covered with cotton and epoxy by Zuber. Harold Clossey of Camden made new main, jib and top sails with total area of 1,308 square feet. The total restoration took 4 years. Also seen in this view are the Friendship sloops, the 31' MARA E., No. 147, built by Newman / J. Jones, Boothbay, Maine in 1974 and the 31' LIBERTY, No. 157, built by Newman / Salter, Manset, Maine in 1980
