GOVERNOR AMES
5 masted schooner, built in 1888 at Waldoboro by Leavitt Storer for C.A.Davis of Fall River, Mass. Named for Gov. Oliver Ames of Mass- 1886-1888. First 5 masted schooner on Atlantic Coast. Master builder was Josiah Dutch of Searsport. Launched December 1, 1888 and on her way to Baltimore, a storm snapped the fore and main masts which went over the side, followed by the remaining masts which fell along the deck. Towed by tug H.F.Morse to Boston where repairs were made and by mid February 1889 she was ready for a first charter. After 20 more years the GOVERNOR AMES was lost off Cape Hatteras on december 13, 1909 with the loss of all hands except one Nova Scotia crewman, who provided the details of her demise.
