Whaling Nova Scotia

On a rainy day in September 1970 men were dragging a whale carcass up the ramp to the Karl Karlsen & Co., Ltd., factory at Blanford, Nova Scotia. In one hour they could strip a whale carcass. In the plant they made bone meal, marine oil, fertilizer, animal feed, and Japanese bacon and steaks. Built in 1945, the whale factory employed 40 people for the whale fishing season, June through November. Earlier in the year they processed seals.
