Whaling Nova Scotia

Workers in the Karl Karlsen & Co., Ltd., factory at Blanford, Nova Scotia, processed whales for bone meal, marine oil, fertilizer, animal feed, and Japanese bacon and steaks. Built in 1945, the whale factory employed 40 people for the whale fishing season, June through November. Earlier in the year they processed seals.
