Verne Carter with cup won on July 4, 1894 by Sloop SOPOLIO. SOPOLIO went to Portland for freight in January gale. returned and left for Nathan' Carter's store on ice. Broke skim with oar. Dropped anchor. Hauled freight on hand sled to shore, then a single yoke oxen the length of the island to N.carter store and Post Office. Long Island is about 3 miles long.
