Schooner STEPHEN TABER
STEPHEN TABER - Shown here 3/1/1982 - Looking into her bow during the restoration - Owners Ken & Ellen Barnes - Built originally , as near as they can tell, at the Van Gott Shipyard in N.Y. ? around 1871. She is the oldest documented merchant sailing vessel in continuous service in the U.S. She has never had an engine. She operated out of Port Jefferson N.Y. for many years under the ownership of Captain Byron Hallock. She was anchored in the Hudson when Adm. Dewey brought the fleet back from Manila in 1898 after the Spanish American War. She is thought to have evidence of being present when the statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886.
