The schooner ELSIE of Gloucester, Massachusetts. - She was designed by Thomas F. McManus and built by Arthur D. Story of Essex, Massachusetts. She was launched May 9, 1910. LOA 124' Length at tehe waterline 102.6' Registered length 106.5' Breadth 25' Depth 11' 5" Draft 14' 6", Gross tons 137 Net tons 98 Shown here at the helm is Capt. Marty Welch with writer John Connolly (COPY NEGATIVE) No date given on negative envelope. Captain Martin Welch was my paternal grandfather. The photo of him and John Connolly aboard the schooner ELSIE is from circa 1921, the year of the race with the schooner BLUENOSE. ELSIE was indeed built in 1910, but I know Mr. Connolly and some others sailed with the crew in 1921 so that he could write about it. - Dawn Welch Cassell. 2021
