Schooner NATHANIEL BOWDITCH

The schooner NATHANIEL BOWDITCH was built as a private racing yacht by Hodgdon Brothers at East Boothbay in 1923 and christened LADONA. Later she was named JANE DORE, still later JOSEPH W. HAWKINS. As the NATHANIEL BOWDITCH the schooner served the US Coast Guard during World War II as a coastal patrol vessel. She worked as a fishing vessel after the war and later as a sail training ship. Captain Gil Philbrick with partners Dick Klain and Kip Leach bought the vessel in 1975 for windjammer sailing from Rockland. . After another restoration and new owners she was renamed Ladona in 2016 and continued summer work as a luxury schooner. Capt.Philbrick, athletic trainer at University of Maine, sailed her in the Rockland, Maine, windjammer fleet for a number of years.
