LAURA B.
The ferry LAURA B began running daily between Port Clyde, Maine, and Monhegan Island in 1951. Operated by Monhegan Boat Line, she carries mail, freight, and passengers on the 10-mile trip. In this 1988 photo the wooden boat is at the Monhegan dock and her bow and deck can be seen. Originally built in Maryland in 1943, the vessel first served as an Army T-boat in the Pacific during World War II. From 1946 to 1951 she was a lobster smack running between Vinalhaven, Boston, and New York. During the winter of 1981-82 she was pulled from service for a complete overhaul including a new engine and new deck house. The work was done at Goudy and Stevens Yard in East Boothbay, Maine. Monhegan Boat Line also operates a newer 65 ft. passenger boat, the ELIZABETH ANN.
