[included in the exhibit "Working Waterfronts"] Fishing Boats at Dock LB2008.15.376 Half a dozen seagulls are ignoring Elmer Montgomery as he records this nest of small fishing boats. Once ground fish like cod and haddock could be readily caught using long lines out of tub trawls, which is how some of these boats are set up. Seagulls are standing on the tuna harpoon on the larger boat with a shelter, and another one stands on the float or drogue attached to the harpoon. The dories have the nets needed for "stopping" off a cove for herring. Three have been fitted with small bow "puddings" to protect other boats and people from their sharp bows. This photograph may have been taken at New Harbor or Port Clyde. M. Elmer Montgomery Collection LB2008.15.376
