[included in the exhibit "Working Waterfronts"] Tillson's Wharf, RocklandMaine--March, 1936 LB2008.15.228 In 1931, the William Underwood Company established a fish processing plant on Tillson's Wharf. They could use the fish brought in by ground fishing draggers like the Rockland owned vessels, LOUIS A. THEBAUD, launched in Essex Ma, in 1930 , and ST. MICHALE , built in Boston in 1923. Despite this plant and others, Rockland could not compete with Portland and the Massachusetts ports for fin fish. The local fresh fish market was too small and rail transport was cheaper. The buoy tender/ icebreaker KICKAPOO lies further down the wharf and the Vinalhaven and North Haven steamboat W.S. WHITE is at the steamboat terminal. The fish processing plant has been built right to the outside of the wharf so that a conveyor belt can be used to unload fish. M. Elmer Montgomery Collection LB2008.15.228
