Steam lighter SOPHIA

From collection Elmer Montgomery Collection

Steam lighter SOPHIA

SOPHIA alongside O’Hara’s wharf, full length starboard side view. She was powered by a pair of steam engines driving two propellers, but it was low power and resulted in a slow speed. Snow’s tug SOMMERS N. SMITH towed SOPHIA if the distance was great. Her hull was flat bottomed so she was, in essence, a big skiff.
