Steam lighter SOPHIA
SOPHIA alongside O’Hara’s wharf. SOPHIA was built in Boston in 1892 and for many years was owned by Snow Marine Co. "She dredged, salvaged, and carried granite blocks, having built most of the docks on North Haven and Islesboro for their summer colonies. She ended her days (as shows in one of the C.T. Berry photos) at the Snow Marine Basin across from the ferry terminal in Rockland. Isadore Gordon salvaged much of her, after which I think she was destroyed by a backhoe. Dynamite Payson built a model of SOPHIA."
