Shore Dinner Here, a group of women and girls prepare a lobster bake on a rocky shore at Matinicus Island, Maine. This great Maine tradition was not just a tourist activity. Upon seeing this 1898 photo published years afterwards, Florence M. Carlson Foltz of Sussex, Wisconsin, wrote, "[This] shows the ladies of Matinicus preparing lobster at the beach. My mother, Minerva Young Carlson, is the child, less than a year old, at the lower right sitting in the lap of her mother, Mrs. Reuben Young. Others in the photo are her grandmother, several aunts and cousins."
