Deck view of Schooner-2 COLUMBIA under sail taking water over port rail

Deck view of Schooner-2 COLUMBIA under sail taking water over port rail First to market meant more money in the pocket. A big fishing schooner, close hauled under a press of sail and driving home from the fishing grounds, could give hardworking fishermen a well-earned respite and add to the price paid for their catch. Here COLUMBIA, built for the 1923 International Fisherman's races to a design by Starling Burgess, sails hard. Judging from the lack of dory stacks and fishing gear on deck, this photograph was made during the races by photographer Edwin Levick, whose negatives are in the Mariners Museum, Newport News, Virginia.
