US Revenue Cutter BEAR, a steam barkentine-3, anchored in ice off Alaska's northern coast. In back ground is USRC CORWIN. The Revenue Marine Service was a forerunner of the U.S. Coast Guard, BEAR is regarded as their first icebreaker, served in Alaskan waters for 40 years, and was one of their most fammous and historic vessels. note This photo and press release (on reverse) were issued 3 days after the BEAR sank in the North Atlantic.
