ALICE S. WENTWORTH

Schooner-2 ALICE S. Tolles, the schooner was rebuilt in 1905 and renamed the ALICE S. WENTWORTH. It was later owned by actor, Jimmy Cagne.The two-masted, gaff-rigged vessel then called Lizzie A. Tolles was built in 1863. The merchant vessel carried cargo along the New England and New York coast, and was later sold to the Stevens brothers of Wells, Maine. The schooner was hauled out in 1904 and underwent an extensive rebuilding. In 1905 it was re-registered and renamed the Alice S. Wentworth and sailed the coast, hauling freight, until 1943. The Wentworth became a cruise ship out of Maine from the late 1940s until 1962, when a Sandwich school teacher, Ann B. White, bought the ship to use for weekend windjammer cruises. It was sold to Anthony Athanas of AnthonyÆs Pier 4 Restaurant in Boston in 1965, the Alice S. Wentworth became a tourist attraction alongside the restaurant. Once again, the boat sank. It was then filled with Styrofoam to keep it afloat, but eventually the Wentworth broke apart in a storm in 1974.
