Portland Head Light, Maine's oldest lighthouse, was built in 1790 and raised 20 feet during the Civil War. It is located in South Portland at the entrance to Portland Harbor from Casco Bay. This close view across a deep ledge shows the very large keepers' house attached to the lighthouse by a low shed like building. Beyond the light toward the water is another small utility building. Standing separately to the left are two other modest buildings. The house is 2 and 1/2 stories with twin chimneys, two porches along the front and gable windows. The light was automated in 1989. The former lighthouse keepers' house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.
