Man with lobster pots on beach, Island Inn, Monhegan

Man with lobster pots on beach with houses, Island Inn beyond. Fish Beach, Monhegan circa 1910s- the fellow with the traps is Andrew Peterson. He was born in Denmark in 1849. He immigrated to the US in 1882 and purchased his home on Monhegan in 1891. Andrew was a very successful fisherman. His most famous catch was a 3-ton basking shark. The dilapidated building behind him was his fish house, torn down in 1930. The recently constructed Island Inn shows that this photograph was taken after 1910, while the lack of a granite wharf on the far left dates this at prior to 1922. --Monhegan Museum 2015
