Nelson Mullin House June 1895 North Haven

Nelson Mullin House in June 1895 at North Haven Island Nelson Mullin was a Real Estate Agent and the Deputy Collector and Inspector for North Haven in the Belfast District of the Customs Service in the 1880s. Mullin and several others were incorporated as the North Haven Hotel Company in 1874.Mr. Mullin hosted an unplanned visit by President (1869-1877) Ulysses S. Grant in 1873* *President Grant visited Maine in August of 1873 at the invitation of James G. Blaine, Speaker of the House of Representatives. He arrived in Augusta on the thirteenth. He visited several local places and indicated that he had a desire to visit Mt. Desert. Accordingly the party traveled to Rockland and boarded the Revenue Steamer McCULLOCH. Shortly after departing Rockland on the fifteenth a thick fog rolled in and with darkness coming on, it was deemed hazardous to proceed farther. Shelter was sought at North Haven, where the night was passed, with the ladies remaining on board the steamer while President Grant and his party stayed at the Mullin House, then owned and managed by Nelson Mullin. For two hours, the President delighted everyone present with a stirring account of the campaigns in which he had fought during the Civil War.
