Main Street

View of the north side of upper Main Street during the 1903 Old Home Week celebration of Belfast's Semi Centennial of becoming a city. The store on the left (partial view) is Alden D. Chase's dry goods store. The store featured carpets, gloves, hosiery, the latest novelties and trimmings. In 1903 the store had been in business for around 50 years in 1903. The store comprised two floors measuring 28 X 65 feet. The store stocked an extensive stock of foreign and domestic goods. To the right of Chase's is City Drug. The proprietors of City Drug in later years were Norman Read and Maine Hills (both natives of Belfast), both with a wealth of experience in the drug business. In the rear of the store was the laboratory, equipped with every modern device and safeguard to ensure promptness and accuracy in the compounding prescriptions and family medicines. In the store you would find toilet articles and preparations. Sick room requisites and hospital supplies, guaranteed rubber goods are carried here as well as Rexall products. One of the pleasing features of this pharmacy was the splendid soda fountain, at which was dispensed the purest and most wholesome summer beverages, ices, sundaes and other popular confections. A choice line of the freshest candy (chocolates and bon bons) as well as Moxie and leading brands of cigars and cigarettes made this store a popular headquarters. The identity of the next store is obscured by bunting and, therefore, remains unlearned. Next is Eaton & Davis, Cigar Manufacturers.
