NellS Circus (Sells)
Circus marching up Main St.at the corner of Washington St. A variety of circuses regularly visited Belfast every summer. In this view one can see four elephants; the first two and last elephants are African while the middle elephant is an Indian elephant. This would seem to be confirmed by the howdah atop the elephant and the decorative skirt draped over the elephant. Although one of the lead elephants also sports a howdah it is African as evidenced by the flatter head which is typical of the African where the Indian's skull protrudes upwardly more significantly than the African. Also seen are several dromedaries following the elephants. A sign for Geo. A. Bailey Carriages & Sleighs can be seen above the street. In the background one can see a sign for Dunbar's Livery Stable (presumably down Washington St.), a fish market and a furniture business in the Coliseum building.
