Dec 17, 1893 Church St., Belfast - Snow scene Located at what is known locally as the "Foot of the Square" between High Street (on the right) and Church Street (on the left) is the James Patterson White house. Designed by Calvin Ryder and built in 1840 it is one of the state's finest examples of high Greek Revival architecture. It features shiplap siding, large corner boards, central pavilion, Ionic columns supporting 2-story entablature, cupola and cast iron cresting. The European Copper Beech tree in the front yard is the largest one in the state. James White, a native of Belfast and a successful businessman, was born in 1800 and died in 1879. He served as Belfast's Mayor from 1861 to 1863 and a state senator from 1862 to 1863. Mr. White, who previously lived at 74 Church Street, and his brothers owned a paper mill on Goose River and a shipbuilding yard at the foot of Allyn Street. James P. Taliaferro of Jackson, Florida purchased the home from Dr. E. A Wilson, for a summer home in 1910. Born in 1847, Taliaferro served in the Confederate army during the Civil War, became a successful lumberman, and represented Florida in the U.S. Senate from 1899 to 1911. He died in 1934.
